Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gazing with closed, contemplative eyes from Malvina Hoffman's masterful bronze, the Singhalese subject of this Field Museum postcard projects an almost meditative dignity — part of Hoffman's monumental "Races of Mankind" commission, one of the most ambitious sculptural projects of the 20th century. Hoffman, a student of Rodin, traveled the world between 1930 and 1933 to create 101 bronze figures for Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History, now housed in the Chauncey Keep Memorial Hall. This card depicts the Singhalese (Sri Lankan) subject, labeled "Ceylon, India," reflecting the geographic conventions of the era. An unposted museum souvenir, it captures an artifact of interwar anthropological ambition and artistic achievement that remains hotly discussed by scholars today.
