Antique & Vintage Postcards

Before chain restaurants homogenized the American roadside, a Cantonese-American restaurant called Foo & Faye anchored State Route 13 near Lake Wawasee outside Syracuse, Indiana — and this vivid 1960s chrome postcard captures it in its prime: brick exterior, warm wood-paneled dining rooms, cheerful yellow pendant lights, and white-napkined tables set for an evening crowd. Sent in June 1965, the card carries a disarmingly candid note from Ethel to her friend Marie, a box office worker at Beatty Memorial Hospital in Westville, Indiana: "Will this card take the place of the one I didn't send from Hawaii? Next time I won't be so thoughtless. I was very busy having a good time." The restaurant near Lake Wawasee served Tuesday through Saturday 4–10 p.m. — a charming snapshot of Midwestern leisure dining culture.
