Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rendered in vivid linen-era color, this 1929 view of the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis captures one of America's most celebrated Masonic landmarks at the very moment it was newly completed — the cathedral opened in 1929 and was almost immediately recognized as a masterpiece of Gothic-Tudor architecture. The illustrated facade bristles with pinnacles, tracery windows, and a soaring central tower that dominates the composition against a candy-blue sky streaked with stylized clouds. Published by DeWolf News Co. of Indianapolis and postmarked May 12, 1929 at 5 PM, this card traveled from Indianapolis to John in Girard, Ohio, bearing a machine slogan cancel that reads "LET'S GO — CITIZEN TRAINING CAMPS," a patriotic military-preparedness campaign of the late 1920s. The handwritten message on the left column is partially legible, mentioning the "grand cathedral" in an admiring tone.
