Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dated August 19, 1911 in the sender's own hand, this vivid tinted card of Springfield's grand Victorian railway station catches the structure at its proud peak — the Richardsonian Romanesque depot with its steeply pitched rooflines, arched entry tunnels, and decorative stonework was a gateway to western Massachusetts for generations of travelers. Published by F. Cracauer of Springfield, the card was written by someone who signs only "I." to a young Master E.A. in Ware, Massachusetts, cheerfully reporting: "We got home alright, came on the electric. I suppose mama told you how we got lost, or she did! in F'ld. Tell mama I have got something for her. I have been down…" — the message cut off, leaving the errand tantalizingly unfinished. The address is routed to Rural Free Delivery No. 1, a detail that anchors the card in the early days of American rural mail service.
