Antique & Vintage Postcards

Brick and white-trimmed verandas emerge from a lush, almost wild-looking hillside garden in this warm hand-tinted view of Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Massachusetts — a city then roaring with the energy of its massive textile mills and the immigrant communities who ran them. Lawrence General, founded in 1875, served a dense industrial population; just a few years after this card was printed, it would treat hundreds injured in the landmark 1912 Bread and Roses strike. The sprawling open porches visible here were standard tuberculosis-era hospital architecture, meant to flood wards with fresh air. Published by Robbins Bros. of Boston and printed in Germany — the gold standard for chromolithographic postcard quality before World War I cut off that trade — this card was never mailed, leaving its face in crisp, unfaded condition.
