Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sunlight filters through a cathedral of maples and birches to reveal the rustic lower station building of Mount Holyoke's famous incline railway — and high above, just barely visible through the treetops, the Summit House perches at the peak like a dream, in this richly atmospheric Litho-Chrome card from the golden age of New England tourism. Mount Holyoke in South Hadley, Massachusetts was one of the most beloved scenic destinations of the early 20th century; the Skinner family's Summit House and the cliff railway drew thousands of visitors who arrived by trolley from Northampton or Holyoke to ascend 900 feet for panoramic Connecticut River Valley views. Published by the Springfield News Company using the prestigious Litho-Chrome process printed in Germany, this unused card retains vivid color. The undivided-back format with the "one cent for United States" postage notice dates it to the 1901–1907 window.
