Antique & Vintage Postcards

The sturdy Romanesque Revival mass of Dalton's Methodist Church fills this hand-colored postcard with warm golden light — its rose window, rusticated stone arches, and square bell tower speaking to the prosperous mill-town confidence of a Berkshire County community built on the paper-making industry. Dalton, Massachusetts, home of Crane & Co. (makers of U.S. currency paper since 1879), supported fine civic institutions including this substantial church, which the card depicts on an unpaved Main Street still innocent of automobile traffic. Published locally by Geo. M. Daly of the Irving House in Dalton and printed by the Albertype Co. of Brooklyn — known for high-quality American-made photographic postcards — this unused hand-colored card is a fine example of the Albertype firm's work. The blank undivided message area and Albertype back design suggest a date of approximately 1910–1915.
