Postcard 1976 Alma-Ata Almaty Kazakhstan USSR Soviet Set 10 Chrome Cards

Almaty (Alma-Ata), Kazakhstan1976ChromeGood

A vivid time capsule of Soviet Central Asia at its modernist peak — this complete, unused set of ten chrome postcards captures Alma-Ata (now Almaty), Kazakhstan's former capital, in the mid-1970s with the confident swagger of late-Soviet urban planning. The folder cover shows the grand colonnaded façade of the Communist Party Central Committee building, red flag snapping above its cornice, a teal Volga GAZ-24 sedan gliding past manicured hedges and scarlet flower beds — a scene so composed it reads almost like socialist-realist painting made photographic. Inside, photographer B. Podgorny documents the city's showpiece landmarks: the circular Kazakh State Circus with its yurt-inspired dome, an equestrian statue of a Kazakh hero in autumn gold, the modernist Tsum department store canopy, the airport terminal fronted by a gleaming jet-shaped sculpture, the Medeo high-altitude skating rink nestled in the Zailiysky Alatau mountains, the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre with its snow-capped Tian Shan backdrop, Soviet-era apartment towers, the Alma-Ata Hotel, and a fountain plaza. The Ministry of Communications of the USSR published this set in 1976, priced at 42 kopecks, with pre-printed 3-kopek Pochta SSSR stamps on each card — all unused, clean, and bright. Few complete sets in this condition surface outside Kazakhstan, making this a prized find for Soviet-era ephemera collectors and Central Asian history enthusiasts alike.
