Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched on the narrow shingle bar separating the freshwater Slapton Ley from the open sea, the village of Torcross clings to Devon's coast in this luminous early-colour photographic postcard — a view that carries poignant historical weight, as this same stretch of Slapton Sands was requisitioned and evacuated during World War II for the disastrous American D-Day rehearsal Exercise Tiger in April 1944. Here, in the peaceful Edwardian era, whitewashed cottages line the single street of Torcross, the lagoon of Slapton Ley spreads to the left, and the sea shimmers to the right — a tranquil scene utterly unlike what would come four decades later. Published by the renowned Francis Frith & Co. of Reigate (here listed as "F. Frith & Co. Ltd., Reigate"), this unused card was printed in England and belongs to Frith's widely collected topographical series. The divided back (address only right, communication left) dates this to post-1902, likely 1904–1908.
