Postcard 1976 Alma-Ata Almaty Kazakhstan USSR Chrome Hotel Building Unused

Almaty (Alma-Ata), Kazakhstan1976ChromeExcellent

Shot from a low angle across a blaze of scarlet canna lilies, this Soviet chrome postcard presents one of Alma-Ata's prominent modernist office or hotel towers — a glass-and-steel curtain-wall block rising above a lush park, a fountain misting the mid-ground, and the red-and-blue flag of the Kazakh SSR flying from the rooftop antenna array. The building's grid of blue glazing panels contrasts sharply with the vibrant Communist-red blooms in the foreground, an almost too-perfect piece of Soviet promotional photography. Published by the Ministry of Communications of the USSR circa 1976 and photographed by B. Podgorny, this card bears a pre-printed 3-kopek Pochta SSSR indicium on the reverse and was never mailed. The scene likely depicts the building on Lenin (now Dostyk) Avenue, a thoroughfare synonymous with Alma-Ata's Soviet-era prestige construction boom following the 1966 Tashkent earthquake, which prompted massive investment in earthquake-resistant high-rise design across Central Asia.
