Antique & Vintage Postcards

A tranquil ribbon of deep teal water winds between limestone cliffs and autumn-tinted woodland in this richly chromolithographed view of the River Wye through Monsal Dale, Derbyshire — a scene so beloved that John Ruskin famously lamented the Midland Railway's viaduct that crossed it, calling it a desecration of one of England's most beautiful valleys. Issued by the Midland Railway itself as a promotional postcard to entice passengers onto its London–Manchester–Liverpool route, the card bears the railway's distinctive green-printed heraldic crest on the reverse alongside the slogan "The Best Route for Comfortable Travel and Picturesque Scenery." Railway-issued promotional postcards from the Edwardian golden age are increasingly sought by both postcard and railway memorabilia collectors. This example is unused with clean, bright colour and minimal wear — an unusually fine survivor of Midland Railway's scenic series.
