Antique & Vintage Postcards

A delightful 1936 "Mailing Novelty" souvenir from Dunfermline, Scotland, its cover dominated by a soulful Scottish Terrier peering through a lucky horseshoe adorned with white heather and a tartan ribbon — the quintessential symbols of Scottish good fortune. Hidden beneath the charming Scottie's chin unfolds an accordion strip of black-and-white photographic views of Dunfermline: Dunfermline Abbey from the Bus Stance, the Abbey from Pittencrieff Gardens, Andrew Carnegie's birthplace, Glen Bridge with period double-decker buses, and Lower Bridge in Pittencrieff Glen. The card was mailed from Blairhall, Fife to Mr. and Mrs. Burt Clark of Brookfield, Ohio, USA — the writer (signing as Mary) describes arriving in town, visiting church, and coming to the town, filling the allowable printed-paper-rate space to the brim with warm news from across the Atlantic. Dated 1936 on the front panel, the card is a Valentine & Sons "Mailing Novelty," passed by the G.P.O. for printed paper rate and franked with a 2d orange George V definitive.
