Postcard Aberdeen Scotland Bonnet Blue Mailing Novelty Accordion Fold Valentine

Aberdeen, Scotland1910Pre-linenGood

Sent before the era of picture messages, this charming Scottish souvenir novelty from Aberdeen announces itself with the verse "A Bonnet Blue I send to you / From Bonnie Scotland's strand; / Contained within it you may view / Some Beauties of the land" — and it delivers on that promise magnificently. The cover depicts a large painted blue Balmoral bonnet with a red hackle, golden eagle feathers, and a clan crest badge on a red-and-white diced band, the whole image bursting with Scottish Highland pride. Lifting the flap reveals a cascade of accordion-folded black-and-white photographic views: Aberdeen Beach crowded with Edwardian bathers, Brig o' Balgownie, Union Bridge, Bridge of Don from Balgownie, Aberdeen Harbour packed with sailing vessels and steam ships, Girdleness Lighthouse battered by North Sea waves, Union Street and Facade, and more — published by Valentine & Sons of Dundee and London. This example appears unused, the address panel blank, registered design number 582,699 visible on the front. A lovely, complete example of the Edwardian mailing novelty format at its most inventive.
