Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dappled light filters through mature chestnut trees onto a low stone footbridge arching over the still ornamental lake at St. Stephen's Green, Dublin — one of the most beloved public spaces in Ireland and the scene of fierce fighting during the Easter Rising of April 1916, just years after this card was printed. Valentine & Sons captured this tranquil view in their "Colourtone" process, a photo-lithographic technique that layered warm, naturalistic tints over a monochrome photographic base, giving the water a pewter-grey shimmer and the surrounding foliage rich Edwardian greens. The red-brick Georgian terraces of the south side of the Green are visible through the tree canopy, anchoring the composition in unmistakable Dublin architecture. The card was never posted — the reverse is entirely blank — suggesting it was kept as a keepsake or held in a dealer's stock. Published by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee and London, card no. 24272, printed in Scotland, series code 35-1.
