Antique & Vintage Postcards

Against a midnight-blue Neapolitan sky — the full moon half-swallowed by volcanic cloud — Vesuvius erupts in a cascade of molten orange, its twin peaks silhouetted above the Bay of Naples while lateen-rigged fishing boats rock on a sea turned blood-red by the reflected lava glow. This stunning chromolithograph by S. Hildesheimer & Co., printed at their Bavarian works to their characteristic painterly standard, depicts one of the most iconic and enduringly collectible subjects in European postcard history. Vesuvio in Eruzione (Vesuvius in Eruption) views surged in production following the catastrophic April 1906 eruption — the most destructive since 1872 — when global fascination with the volcano peaked. Hildesheimer's version elevates the subject to near-artistic status: the sulfurous yellows and deep crimsons of the eruption column are rendered with a vibrancy that rivals contemporary oil paintings of the Bay of Naples school. The reverse is entirely blank, unused, "For Inland Use Only," and carries the Hildesheimer London & Manchester imprint with "Printed in Italy" notation — a rare variant in their catalog.
