Antique & Vintage Postcards

A gleaming modernist slab of white concrete rises behind a fountain-studded reflecting pool, its facade dressed with the flags of a dozen nations — a confident mid-century vision of international travel as glamour and global citizenship. This chrome-era card documents the International Airport Hotel at Isla Verde, San Juan, Puerto Rico, an Executive House, Inc. property that catered to overnight travelers and airline crews transiting what was then one of the busiest aviation hubs in the Western Hemisphere. The Isla Verde Airport (now Luis Muñoz Marín International) underwent its major modernization in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and this hotel — with its control-tower-like rooftop observatory, lush palm surround, and long rank of international pennants — embodied the jet-age fantasy of seamless pan-American travel. Printed by Curteich of Chicago in their 3-D Natural Color Reproduction process, the card captures the hotel's cool Mid-Century Modern lines with the saturated, slightly idealized palette Curteich was famous for. Card code 2DK-1606; reverse unused.
