Dramatic afternoon light carves deep shadows across the medieval colonnade of the Knights' Hospital in Rhodes, its romanesque arches marching into the distance in a composition that feels almost cinematic — this is the upper loggia (loggiato superiore) of the Hospital of the Knights of St. John, one of the finest surviving examples of Gothic-Renaissance civic architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. Built in the early 15th century and restored under Italian administration in the 1920s–30s, the building became the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes after World War II. The photograph captures the building during the Italian Dodecanese period (1912–1943), when authorities undertook ambitious restoration and documentation campaigns — this card is part of that effort, issued by the prestigious Milan-Rome publisher Bestetti & Tumminelli as card no. 4 in the third series of Cartoline di Rodi.
