Antique & Vintage Postcards

Framed by a sweeping stone arch draped in flowering vines, a formal garden path at Villa Le Balze in Fiesole recedes toward a second arch where a solitary figure stands — a moment of hushed, aristocratic beauty in the hills above Florence that art historian Bernard Berenson called the finest garden view in Tuscany. Villa Le Balze was designed by Cecil Pinsent for the American philosopher Charles Strong beginning in 1912, and its terraced gardens became a gathering place for the Anglo-American intellectual elite of Florence between the wars. The property was later donated to Georgetown University and survives to this day. This real-photo postcard — one of a matched pair in this batch — captures the garden axis in full bloom, with large terracotta pots and lush ivy creating a composition of rare refinement.
