Postcard 1902 A Highland Stream Deeside Scotland Tuck Oilette Longstaffe

Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland1902Pre-linenExcellent

Dappled afternoon light filters through Scots pines onto a mossy stone arch bridge spanning a rushing Highland burn — this exquisite Tuck "Oilette" after original paintings by artist E. Longstaffe captures Deeside, Aberdeenshire at its most romantically Scottish, heather and gorse crowding the boulder-strewn banks in full summer colour. Deeside, the valley of the River Dee stretching west from Aberdeen toward Balmoral Castle, became synonymous with royal leisure after Queen Victoria fell in love with the region in the 1840s, and postcards like this one fed an insatiable Edwardian appetite for Highland scenery. E. Longstaffe was one of several artists whose landscape oils Tuck reproduced in their celebrated Oilette format — a chromolithographic process designed to mimic the texture of oil on canvas, right down to the embossed linen-weave surface visible on this card's face. A small figure rests on the bridge parapet, a quiet human note in an otherwise untamed landscape that would have thrilled armchair travellers and holiday-makers posting cards home from Ballater or Braemar.
