Postcard Hans Sachs Nürnberg Embossed Stamp Portrait 1548 Handwriting Facsimile

Nuremberg, Germany1920Pre-linenGood

A bearded, intense face stares out from an engraved portrait — this is Hans Sachs, the legendary 16th-century Nuremberg cobbler-poet whose verse shaped the German Reformation, here reproduced on a souvenir card from the Hans Sachs-Haus museum in Nürnberg. The front presents a facsimile of an original handwritten inscription dated Anno Salute 1548, am 10. Tag Oktober — October 10, 1548 — in the flowing Early New High German hand of Sachs himself, reading (per the reverse translation): "Wer nur in allem Stück / folgt Gott und seiner Eltern Rat, / Der hat auf Erden groß Heil und Glück" — a pithy moral verse about following God and one's parents' counsel. The card was issued by the Hans Sachs-Haus, Nürnberg, and bears their distinctive blue circular ink stamp on the reverse featuring a portrait medallion of Sachs, publisher mark KAN, and the full German translation of the handwriting for visitors who needed help deciphering the archaic script. A refined piece of German literary and cultural history, ideal for collectors of early printed ephemera, Reformation studies, or German Romanticism memorabilia.
