Postcard Steamboat on River Valley 1915 RPPC Real Photo Catherine Oct 18

Midwestern/Appalachian River Valley, United States1915RPPCFair-Good

A majestic sidewheel steamboat pushes upriver through a lush, heavily wooded valley, its twin smokestacks trailing wisps against a pale sky — a scene of American riverine commerce and beauty frozen in silver gelatin sometime around 1915, when steamboats were already giving way to railroads but still commanded romantic reverence on rivers like the Ohio, Muskingum, or Kentucky. The vantage point is high above the river on a hillside, with a wooden fence line and cultivated slope in the foreground suggesting farmland overlooking a broad river bend — the composition almost painterly in its sweep of dark treeline, pale water, and the small but proud boat at center. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription: "Oct. 18 – 1915 / To Catherine / from your [?] elder" in a careful cursive hand, suggesting this was a personal photograph postcard given as a keepsake rather than mailed through the post (no stamp was used; "Place 1c Stamp Here" box is blank). An intimate, quietly beautiful piece of Americana.
