Antique & Vintage Postcards

A stately date palm rises from the lush green grounds of an Hawaiian garden, its perfect mirror image shimmering in the still waters of a lily pond below — a composition of rare tranquility that early photographers in the Territory of Hawaii returned to again and again in their quest to sell paradise to mainland audiences. The warm sepia tones of this real-photo postcard give the tropical scene an almost painterly quality, the hanging fronds of a coconut palm drooping in from the right adding a layered tropical density. Captioned simply Date Palm, Hawaii in clean lettering at the lower right, this card was almost certainly produced for the burgeoning tourist and souvenir trade that flourished after regular steamship service connected Hawaii to the mainland. The back uses a divided format with "Correspondence Here / Name and Address Here" and a plain stamp box — consistent with RPPC stock used roughly 1907–1915 in the Territory period, before Hawaii became a focal point of wartime and postwar tourism.
