Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sent from an artillery replacement battalion stationed at Schönbrunn in the Sudetenland in August 1940 — just months after the fall of France — this wartime Feldpost (military field post) real-photo postcard shows the ornate Baroque-revival facade of the Stadttheater in Mährisch Ostrau (today Ostrava, Czech Republic), its pediment crowded with sculptural figures and flanked by mature trees lining a quiet street. The reverse is a layered document of WWII German military postal bureaucracy: a Feldpost frank in lieu of stamp, a crisp circular cancel reading "SCHÖNBRUNN (OSTSUDETENL.) / 29.8.40," a censor's circular stamp, and handwritten routing details including the sender's military address — 1. Batterie, Flack-Ers. Abtlg. 25 (1st Battery, Anti-Aircraft Replacement Battalion 25) at Schönbrunn, Ostsudetenau. The card is addressed to Wien XIX (Vienna's 19th district), Biederp[mannsgasse] 7, to a "Frau [Anton] Nekrasil." The correspondent sends "herzliche Grüsse" (heartfelt greetings). A compact, historically loaded piece of Central European WWII ephemera with military postal, Sudetenland occupation, and Czech architectural interest all in one card.
