Antique & Vintage Postcards

A rushing torrent carves through the dramatic Sigmund Thun Gorge (Kaprunertal, Austria) in this vivid 1925 artist-signed watercolor postcard — tiny figures in period dress pause on a wooden railed bridge as white water thunders below, the towering violet-grey limestone walls closing in around them like a cathedral of stone. Published as a Künstlerpostkarte by Verlag Hermann Kerber of Salzburg, this is the work of celebrated Alpine artist E. T. Compton, whose atmospheric mountain scenes were prized collector items even in their own era. The card was sent on 22 July 1925 from the gorge itself — stamped with the Sigmund Thun Klamm oval cachet — by a traveler named Rudi to his parents ("Liebe Eltern!"), describing a motorcycle adventure along the river to its mouth, the gorge through which the river flows, calling it a great natural attraction. The 7-Groschen Austrian stamp (brown) ties the piece firmly to the early First Republic period.
