Antique & Vintage Postcards

Shot from the Haindlkar, the jagged limestone bastions of the Planspitze (2,117 m) and Rosskuppe (2,154 m) loom over a snow-streaked couloir in this dramatic real-photo postcard from the Gesäuse massif, one of Austria's most formidable alpine landscapes in Styria. The near-vertical rock architecture — beloved by serious climbers — fills the frame with brooding intensity, a frozen cascade of ice still clinging to the gully below the summit towers. Mailed from the Haindlkarhütte at 1,120 m (a hut of the Österreichischer Alpen-Verein, Sektion Reichenstein, Wien) with a violet rectangular hut cachet, it was sent to a young woman named Erlinde at her address in Bruck an der Mur — a heartfelt greeting from the mountains signed by what appear to be two friends. The Austrian Republic 30-Groschen stamp (1949–50 Trachten/Costumes series) dates the mailing precisely.
