Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rendered in warm hand-colored tones that glow like a medieval illumination, this artistic reconstruction of Kranichberg Castle as it stood in 1714 transports the viewer to a lost landscape of towers, courtyards, and forested Alpine slopes — a romantic vision of Lower Austrian heritage printed just as the Habsburg Empire itself was dissolving into the young republic of Deutschösterreich. The card, postmarked from Kirchberg am Wechsel in late August 1920 (the year partially legible), carries one of the most graphically striking stamps of the interwar era: the Deutschösterreich 50 Heller Allegory issue, designed by J. Renner, whose bold expressionist figure cuts a dramatic silhouette in deep navy. Addressed to Familie Ruhsam, a postal official's family in Vienna's third district, this card bridges aristocratic memory and republican modernity in a single small rectangle of cardstock.
