Antique & Vintage Postcards

Daffodils bloom in the foreground while the magnificent twin-towered Gothic spire and Baroque cupola of the Mariazell Basilica — Austria's most beloved pilgrimage church — rise from the valley in this crisp black-and-white real-photo postcard, the snow-capped Tonion massif (1,700 m) looming behind in dramatic contrast. Mariazell has drawn pilgrims since the twelfth century, and by the postwar Republic era it had also become a popular destination for hikers and summer tourists. The reverse bears a lively machine cancellation promoting devotion to the "Grossen Mutter" (Great Mother), a direct nod to the town's Marian pilgrimage tradition. A sender named "Hannebell" (first name) dashed off a brief greeting — "Gruße aus… Rose u. Resi" — and addressed the card to a "Frau Niespeil" in care of "Spreitzer-Eder" at Bleichergasse 1/10, Wien 9. The Austrian Republic 30-Groschen stamp depicting a woman hiker is a visually fitting touch on a card celebrating alpine travel.
