Antique & Vintage Postcards

Like a giant's fingerprint pressed into the face of Agate Mountain, the dizzying switchbacks of Serpentine Drive wind their way down toward Ute Pass in this saturated linen-era postcard — foreground yucca plants lend a high-desert character to the scene, while the road itself, carved into the red-orange rock, disappears and reappears across multiple hairpin turns that must have thrilled and terrified early automobile tourists in equal measure. Serpentine Drive was part of the famous Cave of the Winds Circle Trip, a scenic auto excursion from Manitou Springs that became a signature Rocky Mountain tourist experience in the 1920s and 1930s. The reverse text describes the route in promotional language, noting the switchbacks "cut back and forth across the face of Agate Mountain in spectacular fashion." Unused and crisp, this Sanborn/Teich linen retains exceptional color.
