Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dwarfed to near-invisibility by the sheer granite walls of the Grand Cañon of the Arkansas, a steam locomotive threads its way along the canyon floor far below the Royal Gorge Bridge — at the time of this card's printing, legitimately the highest suspension bridge in the world at 955 feet above the Arkansas River — its cable span stretched gossamer-thin against the sky like, as the reverse prose puts it, "a mammoth cobweb between the tops of its serried walls." The Royal Gorge Bridge opened in 1929, and this Sanborn/Teich linen captures it in its early glory days, when the D&RGW Railroad still ran passenger trains through the canyon below. The notation "D.&R.G.W.R.R." in the lower margin identifies the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, whose narrow-gauge right-of-way through this spectacular gorge was itself the subject of a famous legal battle with the Santa Fe Railroad in the 1870s. Unused and vivid.
