Antique & Vintage Postcards

Canopied by mature elms on a wide, sun-dappled corner lot, the Lawrence High School cuts an imposing Beaux-Arts figure in this vivid linen-era card — its buff limestone façade, tall arched windows, and bold American flag above the entrance projecting the confidence of a mid-century industrial city at the height of its prosperity. Lawrence, famously dubbed "The Queen City of the Merrimac Valley," built its schools as temples of civic aspiration, and this building — still standing — is among the finest examples. Published by Louis Pearl of Lawrence and printed by Curt Teich on their celebrated "C.T. Art-Colortone" linen stock, the card captures the golden afternoon light of a New England summer in the saturated palette that made linen cards the dominant postcard format of the 1930s and 1940s. The card was never mailed.
