Antique & Vintage Postcards

Still water mirrors a graceful three-arch stone bridge in this tranquil hand-colored Edwardian view near Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts — a scene so perfectly composed it reads almost like a painting, the lush overhanging trees framing the pale limestone arches and their ghostly reflections in the Charles River below. Newton Lower Falls, one of the oldest mill villages in New England, sits at the boundary of Newton and Wellesley, and this bridge — likely the Washington Street Bridge — was a popular subject for early postcard publishers drawn to its picturesque combination of historic stonework and sylvan riverbank. Published by Robbins Bros. of Boston and printed in Germany, the card represents the premium end of the pre-linen market: rich color, fine detail, and a card stock that has held up remarkably well after more than a century. The reverse bears only a penciled "M" suggesting it was pulled from a dealer lot before ever being addressed or mailed.
