Antique & Vintage Postcards

A single saguaro sentinel stands tall against a hand-tinted Arizona sky as Superstition Mountain looms in dramatic purple and green behind it — this early scenic card of the legendary range east of Phoenix was mailed during the summer of 1918, while the world was still at war, by a woman named Mrs. M. Chase who had arrived in Phoenix on June 11th seeking a warmer, drier climate for a companion named Merrill. "Found it some hot — 114 in the shade the day we came," she writes to a friend in Port Huron, Michigan, "but we don't mind it much and like it here fine. Merrill is getting along first rate and looks good." A vivid human story of health-seeking migration to the Southwest, common in the early 20th century, preserved on a scarce early Phoenix scenic.
