Postcard 1930s Linen Cathedral Spires Garden of the Gods Colorado Springs CO

Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA1935LinenGood

Brilliant crimson sandstone towers pierce a cobalt sky in this vivid linen-era view of the Cathedral Spires at Garden of the Gods — formations so otherworldly that early visitors insisted they must be ruins of Montezuma's temple. The saturated color lithography, typical of Curt Teich–era linen printing, makes the red rock glow almost supernaturally against the green piñon-juniper scrub below and the blue-gray Rampart Range behind. Garden of the Gods was donated to Colorado Springs as a free public park in 1909 by the heirs of Charles Elliott Perkins, and by the 1930s it had become one of the most-photographed landscapes in the American West. This card, numbered 15731, was never mailed and retains crisp, unfaded color throughout.
