Antique & Vintage Postcards

Teetering impossibly on its narrow sandstone pedestal, the famous Balanced Rock of Mushroom Park looms against a turquoise linen sky in this 1936 mailed gem — and the handwritten message on the back is pure Americana gold. Someone signing themselves "Chubbie" dashed off a breezy note to a Mr. B. in Port Huron, Michigan: "Having quite a time. Suppose Banjo's are in P. Huron. Beautiful spot out here. You should see the cowboys out here. Big rodeo tomorrow. We are going to it. A big back in it." The postmark reads Manitou Springs, Colorado, June 26, 1936, at 2:32 PM — a sunny summer Saturday at the edge of the Rockies. The Balanced Rock, described on the reverse as a "huge boulder weighing many tons" resting on a base of "but a few feet," became one of the defining curiosities of the Pike's Peak region and appeared on dozens of souvenir cards through the mid-20th century.
