Postcard 1910 RPPC Tam O'Shanter Souter Johnny Statues Scotland Valentine's

Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, Scotland, UK1910Pre-linenGood

Two jovial stone companions raise their cups in eternal camaraderie — Tam O'Shanter and his cobbler friend Souter Johnny, immortalized in sandstone by sculptor James Thom in 1828 and enshrined ever since at Souter Johnny's Cottage in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. This photograph captures the life-sized statues with remarkable textural depth: every fold of Tam's coat, every crease on Souter Johnny's leather apron rendered in crisp monochrome. Robert Burns wrote his rollicking 1790 poem "Tam O'Shanter" partly inspired by real neighbors in this South Ayrshire village, and the statues became among Scotland's most visited literary curiosities. Published in Valentine's celebrated "Valesque" series — a registered photographic postcard process known for its exceptional tonal range — this unused card carries the series number 24-2 and the penciled dealer notation "150" on the reverse.
