Antique & Vintage Postcards

Thursday, 11 p.m. — somewhere near Piccadilly Circus, a couple called Dad and Elma are still wide awake and utterly enchanted: "Like London tremendously," they write, having already "walked miles besides riding a double-decker bus" and dining at Scott's restaurant near the very square pictured on this vivid real-photo postcard. Shot from an elevated vantage point, the image is a mid-1950s advertising billboard extravaganza — Bovril, Schweppes Tonic, Wrigley's, Brylcreem, and Jacob's Cream Crackers blaze across the curved façades, while the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain (popularly known as Eros) stands on its stepped octagonal plinth at the circus's centre, surrounded by double-decker AEC RT-type buses and 1940s–50s automobiles. Mailed airmail from London W on 3 August 1955 to Mr. & Mrs. R.W. Johnson on Windsor Drive in Windsor Hills, Wilmington, Delaware, USA, the card carries an 8d Queen Elizabeth II Wilding definitive stamp and bears a lovely narrative message in blue ink from Dad and Elma, who clearly savoured every mile of their English-speaking European adventure — noting they "look like immigrants" and are grateful to be back in an English-speaking country after continental travel by BEA.
